A Silent Killer
A deadly bacteria, carried by ticks, is killing young people in Baja California, Mexico - and moving north. If the disease, known as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, is not treated within a few days of contraction, the fatality rate is nearly 100 percent. Most of the victims in this desert area are children under the age of 10. They play outside with the many stray dogs who transport the ticks throughout the impoverished agricultural communities.
It is commonly misdiagnosed as hepatitis, influenza or even the common cold. Hospitals in the area lack the necessary antibiotics to treat the disease should it be diagnosed in time.
